Format
WOFF, Web Open Font Format
The original W3C web font format: a TTF or OTF wrapped in gzip compression.
WOFF became a W3C recommendation in 2010, finally giving browsers a font format built specifically for @font-face instead of a repurposed desktop file. It's smaller than a raw TTF, though it's mostly been overtaken today by the more efficient WOFF2.
Best for
- Legacy browser fallback alongside a WOFF2 primary source
- Sites that specifically need to support browsers older than 2016
