WOFF vs WOFF2: Old Web vs New Web
Both are web-only formats. The whole difference comes down to compression, and how much smaller it makes your files.

|---|---|---|
| Compression algorithm | gzip | Brotli |
| Typical size vs. WOFF | 100% | about 70% |
| Browser support | ~99% including old browsers | 97%+ of current browsers |
| Recommended today | Fallback only | Primary format |
When to use WOFF
Keep a WOFF file around only as a fallback if you specifically need pre-2016 browser support.
When to use WOFF2
WOFF2 should be your primary, and often only, web font format at this point.
